Tweetsie Trail

About ten miles of rails-to-trails between Elizabethton and Johnson City on the old ET&WNC grade. Walking, bikes, strollers. Pedals on Rails is the family rail-bike operation people mention near this corridor — confirm current runs on their own site.

Doe River Gorge train

Cliff-side ride above the river out of Hampton. A standard kids-and-grandparents day. Seasonal; check the gorge railroad before you promise a ticket.

Linear Path

Town walk along the Doe and toward the covered bridge. Easy after dinner. Blackbottom is also a common raft take-out.

Watauga Lake

TVA lake above Watauga Dam. Swim, paddle, quiet coves when the tailwater is too pushy or too skinny.

Joe O’Brien Field

Appalachian League baseball in Elizabethton. Mountain behind the outfield when the lights are on. Schedule is seasonal.

Johnson City mountain-bike park. Flow trails and a Velosolutions pump track. Good when the kids are done with the dock.

Second weekend of June

Elizabethton Covered Bridge Festival is the town’s named June event around the 1882 bridge. Confirm the year’s dates with the city before you travel for it.

Late September – October

Color by elevation. High balds first, mid-slopes mid-October, river valley last.
